Char Steakhouse opens in Carmel
Char Steakhouse opened in Carmel in the former Cantinetta Luca space. Restaurateur Bashar Sneeh and the Dametra Group developed the concept as the group’s first dedicated steakhouse, with a menu spanning Prime steaks, seafood, pasta and wood-fired pizza.
Why it matters: The opening represents continued investment by an established local restaurant group and fills a prominent Carmel dining space with a new concept.

Edna culinary destination continues phased rollout
Edna, the multi-part food-and-beverage destination at 2585 Biddle Ranch Road, began opening in phases during August with its wine-tasting collective and Market at Edna. A September 10 update confirms that the 50-seat Restaurant at Edna, led by culinary director Jeremy Fox and executive chef Matthew Schaler, is expected to open in October. A distillery is also planned.
Why it matters: The project combines restaurant, retail, wine and spirits operations on one property and could create additional opportunities for Central Coast farms, wineries, suppliers and hospitality employees.

Roma Antica targets late-September San Mateo opening
Roma Antica is preparing a restaurant at 172 East Third Avenue in downtown San Mateo. Operators Roberto Sbaraglia, Dogukan Solmaz and Alessandro Vasselli met while attending culinary school in Rome and plan to bring the group’s Roman-style dishes to the Peninsula. Current reporting points to a late-September opening.
Why it matters: The project expands an independently operated Bay Area restaurant group and adds another full-service restaurant to downtown San Mateo.

Family operators establish new restaurant and bakery homes
La Placa Italian Cuisine opened at 219 Mount Hermon Road in Scotts Valley, combining the former La Placa Bakery and Bedda Mia Restaurant into one restaurant, pizzeria and bakery. Davide La Placa operates the business with his sister Deborah and father Leonardo.
In Watsonville, Ivana Grenz and her husband Kevin opened Melo Bread in the former Miramar restaurant at 532 Main Street. The bakery specializes in naturally leavened breads and operates in a property with longstanding ties to Grenz’s family.
