Californians will vote on a $18 minimum wage. Workers already want $25 and more

“West Hollywood officials this year commissioned surveys in which 42% of business owners said they laid off staff or cut workers’ hours, and city council members agreed to pause the next wage increase until January. Part of the city’s challenge was that business owners had to compete with employers just down the street in Los Angeles, where the minimum wage is $17.28, and Beverly Hills, which uses the state minimum of $16.”

“Walter Schild, owner of a West Hollywood restaurant, said the policy forced him to raise the wages of servers who were making the minimum wage but received substantial extra income in tips, leaving little room to also give raises to back-of-house staff, who were making about $19 to $21. He said he eliminated three jobs, including a baker and a barista, and cut a third of the restaurant’s hours, but the business is “barely surviving.” Schild called minimum wage hikes a “misguided” decision that makes little dent in the cost of living.”

Bay Area startup launches automated kitchen for use in food trucks

"Automaton does address the challenges like the labor shortage and rising cost of ingredients you see right now," said Kim.

"They believe their operation can create jobs, even with a fully automated kitchen.”

"It still requires people behind the scene including the maintenance of our system and people at our kitchen with staff preparing the ingredients," said Kim.

Harris, Trump see votes in not taxing tips. Experts see trouble.

“The idea has caught fire with those workers and the union that represents many of them. But economists on the left and right are sounding alarms about unintended consequences. Depending on how such a tax cut is structured, they warn, it could pile onto the already unsustainable federal deficit, ding Social Security and Medicare, and open a tempting loophole for high-end earners like financiers to recategorize their income to shield it from taxes.”

Portland City Council considers referendums to increase minimum wage

“Joshua Chaisson is a bartender in Portland and an advocate for the Restaurant Workers of America. He says removing the tip credit will lead customers to tip less and actually hurt tipped workers.” “We as workers feel like we’re being ignored," Chaisson said. "We as workers are not asking for this; we’re not asking to be saved, and in fact, tip credit elimination hurts the very workers that it reports to help.”

“The referendum to increase the minimum wage has since been sent to committee by Portland City Council, and the referendum regarding the elimination of the tip credit is set to appear on the November ballot.”
