José Andrés’ restaurant plan at risk as Stanford Shopping Center owner threatens suit over gas ban
The city of Palo Alto had already approved a new project at the Stanford Shopping Center and allowed a natural gas line to be connected. Now, it says it won’t allow the line to be used. That’s where the Simon Property Group comes in. SPG, which owns the shopping center, says Chef José Andrés won’t be able to open a planned restaurant at the site without the ability to use natural gas. The CRA sued the city of Berkeley over the same type of restriction and the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals recently ruled that Berkeley’s ban violates federal law.

OPINION: Los Angeles should allow restaurants to offer outdoor dining without crippling fees
“For the restaurants on main street, my street, and the ones that make up so many of our communities, we encourage the L.A. City Council to think about the businesses and communities they harm by imposing these higher fees. While the pandemic has turned a corner toward recovery, let’s continue to help, not harm, our local restaurants.” – President and CEO of the Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce Maria S. Salinas and Senior Manager of Government Relations for DoorDash, Laura Curtis.

Court upholds California animal welfare law
The U.S. Supreme Court has ruled against pork producers who sued to stop Proposition 12, a law passed by California voters to improve animal welfare. The CRA had supported the pork producers’ lawsuit because of the higher costs expected to result from implementing the new law.
