On Tuesday, April 12, MWD’s Board of Directors is scheduled to vote on a proposal that would increase the cost of treated water for our region by 62 percent by 2017! This dramatic increase to the treated water rate is the result of a new fixed treatment charge that will be a permanent tax that will not go away no matter how much or little treated water MWD’s member agencies actually purchase. MWD’s approach is not supported by water industry practice or California law.
MWD continues to impose rates and charges based on a methodology ruled illegal in superior court last year. After many years of trying to work with MWD to pass legal rates, the CWA brought legal action on behalf of its ratepayers, which were being overcharged by millions of dollars. The judge invalidated MWD’s transportation rates for 2011-2014. Despite that clear ruling, MWD is poised to adopt two more years of illegal rates.
