“For years, our members have been targeted by lawyers who have used the state's access laws to enrich themselves, with little or no benefit to the public,” CRA President + CEO Jot Condie said. “Our members have an innate interest in making our facilities accessible to all patrons, including those with physical disabilities. Unfortunately, and too often, funds that could be used to upgrade facilities and rectify access issues are instead paid to lawyers threatening expensive litigation.”
The effects of SB 1186 will reward businesses that take proactive steps to ensure ADA compliance before a business is sued, Condie said. “We hope this legislation will curb legal abuses, and we look forward to working with Sen. Steinberg and other interested parties to ensure these reforms work as intended.”
