The proposed initiative would raise the wage by $1 on January 1, 2017 and would continue to raise the wage by $1 each year until the wage reaches $15 in 2021. The wage would then be indexed to increase with inflation.
The CRA will be tracking the progress and timeline for this effort, but the next stage would be for it to get cleared for signature gathering. The number of signatures required to qualify an initiative is based on the turnout of the previous election, which was dreadfully low. So, the 2016 ballot is shaping up to have many proposals as many think it will be relatively easy to qualify initiatives.
Beginning on July 1, proponents will have 180 days to a gather 365,880 signatures in order to qualify the initiative for the November 2016 ballot.
The CRA is mounting an opposition campaign and is currently in the midst of a very aggressive fundraising campaign and we will be reaching out to you for help on this critical matter.
