Santa Clara, San Jose to hold polystyrene ban meetings

The Recycling and Waste Reduction Commission of Santa Clara County will meet Monday to adopt a regional policy on polystyrene foam containers at foodservice establishments. The commission will consider a ban on polystyrene food containers and beverage cups. The meeting begins at 5:15 p.m., in the Isaac Newton Center Auditorium, 70 West Hedding St., San Jose. Restaurants, caterers, delis, and other food providers will see their operating costs rise as polystyrene containers are two to three times more affordable than replacement products, which in some cases don’t perform as well, especially for very hot or cold food and beverages.

Foodservice operators are urged to attend the important meeting to voice their opposition. If you are unable to attend the meeting, send a personalized message to commission members.

The City of San Jose also will consider a ban on polystyrene food containers and beverage cups. The city’s first community input meeting is 2 to 3:30 p.m. June 30, at San Jose city council chambers (200 E. Santa Clara Street, San Jose). Parking validation will be available. Food service establishments are also urged to attend this important meeting.
