San Jose stalls polystyrene ban
The San Jose City Council did not move forward with a polystyrene ban ordinance but instead approved an approach that would mitigate the concerns of the small business community, restaurant and food packaging industry, and other stakeholders at its meeting Jan. 24.
The polystyrene ban option was pushed back to 2013, giving the city more time to explore other alternatives and partnerships to achieve its trash reduction goals.
The council did approve supporting a countywide approach to regulating polystyrene food ware and to support SB 568, although the council was not in favor of San Jose taking a lead on banning polystyrene in Santa Clara County.
Due to the city’s interest in partnering with the food packaging industry and California Restaurant Association on addressing all litter and trash, we will continue to engage in these discussions and explore collaborative efforts with the city.
