San Joaquin Air District offers charbroiler retrofit incentives

The San Joaquin Valley Air Pollution Control District is funding $500,000 worth of retrofit emission control devices for commercial cooking facilities operating at least one under-fired charbroiler. The Valley Air District covers eight counties: San Joaquin, Stanislaus, Merced, Madera, Fresno, Kings and the Valley air basin portion of Kern.

Eligibility criteria and application guidelines for the Charbroiler Incentive Program (CHIP) are below. Application deadline is 5 p.m. Oct. 21.

To be eligible for funding, projects must meet the criteria described in the Charbroiler Incentive Program Guidelines, such as:

  • The facility must have operated within the SJVAPCD for at least 24 months before application.
  • The charbroiler must be under-fired.
  • The charbroiler must not be chain-driven.
  • Retrofit devices must reduce VOC emissions by 86 percent and particulate and matter 10 microns and under (PM10) by 83 percent.

The Air District estimates five to 10 projects will be funded. Targeted devices include:

  • HEPA filtration system
  • electrostatic precipitator
  • wet scrubber
  • thermal oxidizer.

The maximum eligible amount per project will be determined by calculating cost effectiveness. Consideration will be given to restaurant size and the type of control device implemented.
