San Diego council to vote on downtown land use proposal Tuesday
The San Diego City Council will vote on a major change to the permit process for downtown projects at 2 p.m. Tuesday. The change could more than double the time it takes to get projects approved, politicize the approval process, drive up construction and operation costs for future projects and create uncertainty and difficulty in securing financing. This change in the process is being pushed heavily by the unions in an effort to mandate project labor agreements and union-only contracts for downtown projects.
The proposed change is being directed at new hotel projects, but the city attorney has raised concerns that the more legally defensible approach is to apply the change to all projects.
