Polystyrene bans in Marin, Richmond enforced beginning July 1

Though bans passed last year on foodservice containers in Marin County and the City of Richmond have been in effect since Jan. 1, so far they have not been enforced. But health officials in both localities said containers will be checked during routine inspections beginning July 1.

The City of Richmond will enforce its ordinance banning the use of expanded polystyrene and non-compostable or non-biodegradable disposable food ware, while the Marin County Board of Supervisors banned polystyrene foam and non-compostable disposable food packaging.
Richmond restaurants found in violation will be cited. Marin County restaurants found in violation will be issued a written warning and allowed 90 days to become compliant. After 90 days, restaurants still in violation will be cited.
