CRAEF, Newport Harbor High instructor presented with Assembly Resolution
The California Restaurant Association Educational Foundation (CRAEF) and one of its leading ProStart schools were honored with an official resolution presented on the Assembly floor Aug. 15.
CRAEF Executive Director Alycia Harshfield and Janet Dukes, a culinary arts instructor at Newport Harbor High School, accepted the award.
Dukes’ students claimed victory in the California ProStart Cup’s culinary and management events in April. The team went on to sweep the National ProStart Invitational, and was the first team to claim both the culinary and management contests in the history of the competition.
Newport Harbor’s unprecedented success was honored by Assemblyman Don Wagner (R-Irvine) with the resolution. In addition to highlighting Newport Harbor’s victory, Wagner described to his fellow Assemblymembers the positive influence CRAEF has had on both California’s students and the restaurant industry.
While in the Capitol, Dukes and Harshfield met with Sen. Tom Harmon (R-Huntington Beach), who is chairman of the Senate Education Committee. They also met with Assemblyman Chris Norby (R-Fullerton), Wagner and Saulo Londono, Capitol director for Assemblyman Allan Mansoor (R-Costa Mesa) to share the details of Newport Harbor’s win and to invite them to the school so they can experience the ProStart program for themselves. ProStart’s success is a tribute to the hard-working teachers and industry professional who have dedicated their time and resources to fostering the next generation of industry leaders.
