The ProStart guidance counselor

Helping students make decisions about their future is no easy task. When students express an interest in restaurant and food service careers, counselors at ProStart schools can provide them with a vast collection of resources and opportunities to explore.

To increase their effectiveness in promoting the ProStart program, guidance counselors should:

  • Place only students interested in the food service industry in ProStart classes.
  • Develop a method for keeping students informed about opportunities, trends and salaries in the restaurant and hospitality industries.
  • Communicate the program’s goals and benefits to students interested in the food service industry.
  • Understand the program’s potential for the college-bound student.
  • Alert students to any articulation agreements with local post-secondary schools.
  • Help students understand and adapt to behavioral expectations in a work setting.
  • Build a network of employer and post-secondary school contacts.
  • Encourage students to apply for scholarships through CRAEF and the National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation.
