Speak out against possible San Diego sales tax increase
The San Diego City Council will vote to put a measure on the November ballot at 10 a.m. Friday at San Diego City Hall, 202 C St., San Diego. Plan to attend the meeting to testify in opposition, and contact Mayor Jerry Sanders and the San Diego City Council to oppose the proposed half-cent sales tax increase. Meeting parking is available at the corner of 3rd Avenue and B Street across from City Hall.
Be sure to include the following points in your correspondence, along with your personal message:
- Restaurants are the highest contributor of sales tax to the City of San Diego’s general fund.
- Restaurants generate 17 percent of the sales tax revenue to the city’s general fund.
- In April 2009, the sales tax went up 13 percent from 7.75 percent to 8.75 percent. The increase would raise the sales tax another 6 percent for a total of a 19 percent increase over less than two years.
- A sales tax increase would hit restaurants in San Diego the hardest.
- It is bad for our businesses and bad for our customers.
- A sales tax increase hurts everyone – restaurants and San Diegans.
