Santa Clara County to take up toy ban April 27

On April 27, the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors will vote on an ordinance to prohibit the use of toys in kids’ meals at restaurants. The proposal by Supervisor Ken Yeager is shortsighted in his attempt to address childhood obesity by placing the blame on restaurants. If passed, the ordinance would set a dangerous precedent for even more restrictive government regulation of the restaurant industry. The proposed law is unnecessary because California’s menu labeling law already provides parents with the tools they need to make informed decisions about nutrition, and will be expanded nationwide under the health care reform law recently signed by President Barack Obama.
