San Mateo to consider mandated healthcare program
The San Mateo County Blue Ribbon Task Force will meet July 23 to continue discussing options for a mandated healthcare program. The committee will consider employer eligibility and minimum spending requirements.
The proposal would force employers to spend a specified or minimum amount per employee for health care or offer a certain level of health benefits for employees, imposing a huge financial burden on employers that could be detrimental to many San Mateo County restaurants.
Using the San Francisco city and county healthcare system as a model, the committee is working to craft a broader program that offers more benefits and would ultimately be more expensive.
The San Francisco system was implemented one year ago and several long-standing restaurants have had to close their doors, reduce operating hours or reduce staff. The California Restaurant Association is dedicated to ensuring that San Mateo County doesn’t adopt the program.
