CRA to continue fight against fast food ban extensions in L.A.

The California Restaurant Association is meeting with Los Angeles City Council members in an effort to stop the first extension of an interim control ordinance that prohibits new fast food restaurants from opening in certain areas of the city.

The ordinance, adopted last year, prohibits permits to establishm new quickservice restaurants on commercial- or industrial-zoned properties in the West Adams-Baldwin Hills-Leimert Community Plan Area and portions of the South Los Angeles and Southeast Los Angeles Community Plan. The ordinance was to last until Sept. 14 or until the adoption of permanent regulatory controls that regulate the opening of new fast food restaurants within the affected areas, whichever came first.

The law allows the city council to extend the ordinance for two additional six-month periods, as long as the appropriate city agencies and officials exercise due diligence to assure that the permanent regulations are being expeditiously processed.
