California Minimum Wage and Sick Leave Mandates - Update

Today, the Assembly Appropriations Committee stopped two important pieces of legislation that would have had direct impacts on the restaurant industry.

AB 10 (Alejo) would have increased the minimum wage to $8.50 beginning in 2012 and force annual upward adjustments based on inflation.

AB 400 (Ma) would have forced California restaurants to provide up to 10 paid, protected sick leave days to employees every year. Accrued sick time could be rolled over from year to year and the legislation would have created a number of legal traps for employers.

Both bills have been held in the Assembly Appropriations Committee and will not be eligible to advance this year.
