CRA agrees to statewide standard for menu labeling
(SACRAMENTO – September 2, 2008) The California Restaurant Association (CRA) has announced its support for SB 1420 (Padilla), which will create a first-of-its-kind, statewide standard for the disclosure of caloric information. The bill requires that chain restaurants with 20 or fewer locations provide nutritional information to consumers either on a menu or menu board.
“Restaurants have been voluntarily providing nutritional information to their customers in a variety of ways for years,” said Jot Condie, president and CEO of the California Restaurant Association. “SB 1420 provides a uniform standard for displaying nutritional information, while avoiding the patchwork of local ordinances that would have been confusing and challenging for restaurants and their patrons.”
SB 1420, a product of ongoing dialogue between the Legislature, the Schwarzenegger Administration and the CRA, will preempt local ordinances and establishes a phased-in approach with full implementation by January 1, 2011.
“The California Restaurant Association has worked with the Governor and the state Legislature for two years to establish a flexible, statewide standard for making caloric information available in restaurants,” continued Condie. “SB 1420 is the result of this collaboration and now moves to the Governor’s desk for his signature.”
