City of Los Angeles menu labeling update
On Wednesday, September 10 the Los Angeles City Council voted in favor of directing the City Attorney to prepare and present an ordinance based on SB 1420 (Padilla) to require chain restaurants with 15 or more outlets in the state to provide basic nutritional information per item on printed menus and menu boards.
City staff has 30-60 days to return to council for their review in the Arts, Parks, Health and Aging committee. If the committee agrees with the wording the item will be sent back to full council for a vote sometime in late November or early December.
City Councilmember Huizar met with CRA staff and informed staff that if SB 1420 is signed by the governor, the City of Los Angeles will not proceed with their local menu labeling ordinance.
CRA staff will be meeting with Los Angeles City Council and their staff and with Los Angeles County Department of Health to discuss.
