Sixth annual California ProStart® Culinary Cup features the culinary and hospitality talents of state’s teens

March 8-9, 2008
Kitchen Academy, Sacramento

The California Restaurant Association Educational Foundation (CRAEF) is pleased to present the sixth annual California ProStart Competition, sponsored by Boyds Coffee. This exciting event brings together talented high school students from ProStart programs throughout California who collectively represent the future of the restaurant and food service industries.

This two-day event consists of both a culinary and a management arm. Through these respective competitions, students put the knowledge and skills they have gleaned in their chosen area of expertise to the test.

Culinary competition
Teams participating in the culinary competition will have just 60 minutes to demonstrate their creative abilities through the preparation of a three-course meal. Their performance during this practical session will be observed and rated by industry professionals.

Management competition
Management competition participants will demonstrate their knowledge of the restaurant and food service industries by competing in two separate events, a case study and a Quiz Bowl. The case study will simultaneously test students’ communication skills and their ability to apply industry knowledge to practical situations. The second portion of the competition, the Quiz Bowl, is a question test, executed much like a game show.

Winning teams from each competition will be awarded first-, second- and third-place trophies and, most notably, scholarships to aid in their pursuit of a post-secondary education. First-place winning teams from each competition will also be sponsored to compete in the 2008 National ProStart Invitational, held in San Diego from Thursday, April 24 through Saturday, April 26, 2008.
