Where can I find out what employees need to receive this training? A food handler is defined by the law as a person who is involved in the preparation, storage or service of food in a food facility. The definition includes most restaurant employees, such as those holding the positions of, but not limited to: wait staff, chefs, head cooks, cooks, bussers, bartenders, hosts and hostesses who handle food and supervisory personnel, such as the general manager or managers. Employees with a valid manager’s food safety certification are compliant with the California Food Handler Card law.
When do my employees need to be trained? The law states current employees who prepare, store and serve food must have a California Food Handler Card by July 1. California Food Handler Card Law Guidelines have been adopted by the California Conference of Directors of Environmental Health and the California Retail Food Safety Coalition that recommend from July 1, 2011 until January 1, 2012 enforcement of the law will be limited to education and notification of requirements for compliance. While these are just guidelines and not regulations, it will help establish consistent/uniform enforcement of the new California Food handler Card law across California’s county lines even tough individual jurisdictions are not legally bound by them.
